Walking around London is the best way to get to know the city.  Along the way, you can stop at many famous places that offer free admission.

We have put together a list of links for you to the various websites that offer free self-guided walks of London and some free led walks as well:

London Walks offers free, downloadable walking tours for your iPod, iPad, iPhone smartphone or other MP3 device. You can hear the sounds of London as you walk. Directions, walking routes, and the history of London and the buildings and sights you pass are all featured as the walks progress.  The downloads are free, but you can donate $25 to receive a disk containing all walks.

South Bank London has five guides in the “Walk This Way” series that explore intriguing pockets of architecture and history along the River Thames.

Walk London has worked with the local authorities to develop an impressive network of quality walking routes. This site has something to offer whether you are looking for a place to feed the ducks, a short stroll in your lunch hour, or an energetic walk to pep you up.

Walk4Life has free led walks all over London on the weekend of Saturday January 28 2011 and Sunday January 29 2011

The Magician offers a free Harry Potter Walk of London.  They will email you a booklet that you can download and print off.  You can then follow the Harry Potter London walk step by step.

London For Free has information and maps for various free self-guided walking tours. Each one covers a different part of London. Simply choose the area you want to explore, print the walk, and go London sightseeing for free.

Walking for Health has all the latest news, events, and other useful information to get you walking in the capital.

Time Out – London Walks offers printable PDF walking guides for north, east, south, and west London.

London Gardens Trust offers a way to explore the lesser-known gardens and green spaces in the capital.  Using their guides, you will discover a range of garden squares, small parks, churchyards and community gardens, which together reflect the history of London from Roman times to the present day.

Walks of London is the website of Richard Jones who has been a pioneering figure on the London walking tour scene for the last 25 years.  His website is a great resource for information about free London walks.

London Tool Kit offers free self-guided walking tours of London. Their four walks cover the main areas of Central London that a first-time visitor will want to cover.

So take a walk around London, and see what the Capital has to offer. There are some fabulous places to explore and some great walks connecting them. You’ll be surprised just how much you can cover and just how much more you will see by walking.

And don’t forget to look up! The best part of London’s architecture is not at street level!

Long before there was Abbey Road, Denmark Street was home to London’s musicians.

Most of the buildings date from the 1800s. Then rents were cheap, and so struggling artists, composers, and musicians found a place to live that was close to the theatres and pubs of Soho. Music publishers set up their businesses here around the 1890s, supplying the musicians of nearby theatres and music halls.

In the 1930s, the street was becoming renowned for music publishing, and shop windows displayed pianos and guitars. In the 1960s, recording studios started setting up.

Regent Sounds Studio opened at 4 Denmark Street in 1963. The Rolling Stones recorded their first album here.  Many are the stories about the Kinks, ELP, and Hendrix recording in the basement.   In 1974, new cutting-edge recording technology attracted Stevie Wonder.

ITV filmed a piece on Denmark Street, which you can watch below:

David Bowie set up residence in a camper van on the street near his studios!  Bob Marley bought his very first guitar here.  Celebrity musicians always have and always will flock here.  You never know who you might see.

Denmark Street is an essential London destination for music lovers.  An enthusiastic  musical community still exists today in the friendly atmosphere of this London side street. There’s always music wafting from basements, shop windows, and balconies and plenty of shops to browse.

London’s Autumn Glory

Autumn – when England’s green and pleasant land turns brown! But have you noticed that our autumns are becoming more colourful in recent years?  “As our climate changes”, suggests Nigel Taylor, The Curator of The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, “the hotter sunnier summers followed by sudden changes in autumn kick off the process of autumn colour development in a much stronger way.”

London’s parks and gardens are the place to be for autumn colours. Visit the Kyoto Garden in Holland Park, the gardens at Eltham Palace, and the Pergola and Hill Garden in Hampstead Heath.  Glorious displays of colours are on view at Kew Gardens where there will be guided walks and tours as part of Autumn at Kew.  There are some seasonal walks in the Royal Parks like this free Autumn Bird Walk in Richmond Park on 15 October.

Drive out to the countryside

Or better yet, treat yourself to a day of relaxation and let us escort you to one of the many beautiful and historical sites on a day trip out of London.

The National Trust property of Scotney Castle is not one but two houses. At the top of the hill is the new house, designed by Anthony Salvin in Elizabethan style and built in 1837 for Edward Hussey III, who took the ‘Picturesque’ style as his inspiration. At the bottom of the valley are the romantic ruins of a medieval castle and moat.

The medieval castle and moat are the focal point of the celebrated gardens featuring spectacular displays of autumnal colour.

The estate is open all year, offering a variety of walks through the beautiful gardens, parkland, woodland and farmland.  After a sedate stroll around the gardens or a more brisk walk in the fields and woodland of the surrounding estate, stop for lunch or cake in their well-stocked tea room.  Sit outside in the sun overlooking the surrounding countryside or snug inside if the weather turns chill.

Hi Mike, I would like to pass on the comments I have received for a service we booked with you on 7th July 2010. You provided a service that enabled our Health & Safety Consultant to attend a pre-arranged training session. This involved collecting said person from their home, taking them to Paddington Station, making sure they got on the train, and then repeating the service in the evening when the consultant returned. Most people would say that this service wasn’t remarkable except the consultant had a nasty accident the week before and is confined to a wheelchair at present. Your driver Paul who was assigned for this service was extremely helpful, nothing was too much bother. He assisted our consultant through what is a daunting experience when you are in a wheelchair, to Paddington Station and accompanied them until they were on the train. Then in the evening the same process was repeated. Our consultant has said in their words “He was Excellent”. Many thanks to Mike and London Black Taxis for an excellent and friendly service. My husband Graham as Senior Director of Music Household Division performs on many State Ceremonial Occasions in front of the Monarch where it is imperative that he is on time. We therefore need to know that a vehicle will arrive as requested and be able to efficiently negotiate the very busy streets of London in order that we reach his destination promptly. Recently some American friends left a camera in the back of a taxi and the driver went out of his way in order to return it for which we are very grateful. The “Meet and Greet – Safe Conduct” Black Taxi service has literally changed my life. As a busy working Mum I was having huge difficulties collecting my daughter from swim-training in the evenings whilst trying to get the baby ready for bed. It was impossible to be in two places at the same time. Now Chris picks my daughter up after swimming and brings her home for me. He is always on time, I have no worries whatsoever about my daughter’s safety, and she loves it because he has a television in the cab which we don’t have in the car! Brilliant!!!!
