We were delighted and very proud to be asked by the Cluster Munition Coalition to provide transportation for Branislav Kapetanovic recently. We provided taxi services to and from Heathrow Airport and to various destinations where Bransislav gave talks about his experiences and about the Cluster Munition Coalition.

Branislav Kapetanovic (born 1965) lost both hands and feet when a BLU 97 submunition exploded when he was going to destroy it at an airstrip in Serbia November 9, 2000. Branislav was a deminer working for the Army and cleared thousands of submunitions after the NATO bombing before one of them finally exploded. His greatest wish now is to see cluster munitions banned, and he is now active in the Cluster Munition Coalition.

“Cluster bombs present a greater danger for the civilian population than for the Army or “enemy” installations, they affect wide areas and continue to affect them for many, many years; I don’t expect anybody to be surprised by what happened to me – it was my duty, my job, but the majority of the people in the world being injured by these bombs are innocent civilians, a large percentage of them unknowing children.”

The Cluster Munition Coalition is an international civil society campaign working to eradicate cluster munitions, prevent further casualties from these weapons and put an end for all time to the suffering they cause. The Coalition works through its members to change the policy and practice of governments and organisations towards these aims and raise awareness of the problem amongst the public.

On 1 August, Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC) members worldwide took part in coordinated campaign actions to celebrate the historic milestone presented by the entry into force (EIF) of the Convention on Cluster Munitions. Globally, events and actions were built around the slogan, “Beat the drum to ban cluster bombs!”

The Convention on Cluster Munitions – the most significant disarmament and humanitarian treaty since the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty – enters into force and becomes fully legally binding on 1 August 2010. From that date forward, states parties must implement all of the treaty’s lifesaving obligations.

Here at London Black Taxis, we greatly admire the work of Branislav Kapetanovic and the CMC and were privileged to be of help in some small way.

Hi Mike, I would like to pass on the comments I have received for a service we booked with you on 7th July 2010. You provided a service that enabled our Health & Safety Consultant to attend a pre-arranged training session. This involved collecting said person from their home, taking them to Paddington Station, making sure they got on the train, and then repeating the service in the evening when the consultant returned. Most people would say that this service wasn’t remarkable except the consultant had a nasty accident the week before and is confined to a wheelchair at present. Your driver Paul who was assigned for this service was extremely helpful, nothing was too much bother. He assisted our consultant through what is a daunting experience when you are in a wheelchair, to Paddington Station and accompanied them until they were on the train. Then in the evening the same process was repeated. Our consultant has said in their words “He was Excellent”. My husband Graham as Senior Director of Music Household Division performs on many State Ceremonial Occasions in front of the Monarch where it is imperative that he is on time. We therefore need to know that a vehicle will arrive as requested and be able to efficiently negotiate the very busy streets of London in order that we reach his destination promptly. Recently some American friends left a camera in the back of a taxi and the driver went out of his way in order to return it for which we are very grateful. The “Meet and Greet – Safe Conduct” Black Taxi service has literally changed my life. As a busy working Mum I was having huge difficulties collecting my daughter from swim-training in the evenings whilst trying to get the baby ready for bed. It was impossible to be in two places at the same time. Now Chris picks my daughter up after swimming and brings her home for me. He is always on time, I have no worries whatsoever about my daughter’s safety, and she loves it because he has a television in the cab which we don’t have in the car! Brilliant!!!! How user-friendly is London for those with temporary or permanent disabilities and injuries?

Bus Travel

London TravelWatch is the official watchdog organisation representing the interests of transport users in and around the capital. They are “The voice of London’s transport users”.

Recently, London Travel Watch surveyed bus stops in the London in terms of their disabled-friendliness. Kingston was been praised by London Travel Watch for having the most disabled-friendly bus stops in the capital. 85 per cent of bus stops in Kingston are accessible to disabled passengers, as revealed by London Travel Watch’s audit of 17,000 London bus stops.

Disabled-friendly bus stops ensure buses can get directly to the kerb to allow easy boarding and alighting, which means bus doors are not obstructed by objects on the pavement, and that parking restrictions are observed around the stops. London Travel Watch says they will continue to press Transport for London and councils to do anything necessary to ensure bus stops are accessible for all.

Our specialty “Meet & Greet – Safe Conduct” service is perfect for anyone who needs a little extra TLC when traveling, such as children, the elderly, and those with limiting injuries or disabilities.

Our “Special Needs Service” drivers are ready and willing to give you any extra assistance that you need, such as helping you down in the lift or escorting you to the train platform.

Licensed London taxis are specially designed to accept special needs customers in wheelchairs. Taxis have wheelchair ramps and safety belts to secure the wheelchair during the journey.

We charge no extra fees for our “Meet & Greet – Safe Conduct” and “Special Needs” services. [All journeys are subject to our Terms and Conditions.]

Please note: electric wheelchairs are slightly wider than manual wheelchairs and require a taxi with wider doors. We have several taxis on our fleet with these wider door specifications, so just remember to mention it when you make your booking.

“Special Needs” Taxis

Licensed London taxis are specially designed to accept special needs customers in wheelchairs.

Get in touch with us if you have special needs and require a taxi on a one-time or a on regular basis. You can pay with your own debit or credit card and then reclaim the costs from the authority involved.

The meter fare is debited from your personal credit or debit card and our electronic company invoice is emailed to your within 24 hours for you to submit to the relevant authority for reimbursement.

Repeat bookings are no problem for us as your card details are held on our secure payment server and a “Repeat Transaction” can be carried out as and when you require another taxi journey.

Our helpful drivers are ready and willing to give you any extra assistance that you need.
