Staying in London

Book a London taxi, tour, or treasure hunt online or phone +44 (0)203 00 44 953

Whether visiting London for a couple of days or a couple of weeks, it’s important to get your accommodation right. London hotels can be pricey, particularly in the city centre and tourist spots. However, there are a lot more flexible and cost-effective ideas such as self-catered apartments and budget B & Bs. Considering all the options can help when planning a hassle-free getaway.

For the less fussy traveller there are plenty of good hostels in London. You can find accommodation as inexpensive as £20 per night if you’re prepared to share with others, dormitory style. But staying in a hostel doesn’t have to mean compromising on privacy; you can get a twin room for yourself and a friend for a little more money. During the summer season it’s also possible to stay in university halls, which often come with very good washing and cooking facilities.

For a slightly more upmarket version of self-catering, it might be worth checking out the apartments, suites, and house-lets that are on offer. During the London 2012 Olympics, some London residents are letting out their private residences on a short-term basis. Prices vary depending on whether the accommodation is serviced by cleaning staff, but usually they come with fully-equipped kitchen areas and entertainment features like TV and stereo as standard. Many of these are only suitable for weekly lets or longer, rather than a weekend away.

With the London Underground at your disposal, it may be wise to think about staying further out of town, as you may get more for your money. This being said, there are now plenty of relatively cheap B & Bs offering a good rate in areas as accessible as Kensington and Bayswater. This accommodation will be simple, often situated in Victorian terraces and is best seen as a clean, convenient base for days out in London. It may be a good option for short city breaks and not something ideal for a longer term holiday.

The more mid-range hotels include well-known names like Travelodge and Premier Inn, but there are a fair amount of independent places about as well. Central districts such as Piccadilly are usually home to the large-scale 3-star complexes which provide decent-sized – although basic – rooms with continental rather than cooked breakfasts.

If you’re travelling in style however, there are any number of luxury and 5-star hotels to choose from. Think historic town-houses, unique retro interiors and individual extras like kid’s concierge staff and day-trip planners. Several hotels are listed buildings, and put on traditional tea services in the afternoon.

Whatever your priorities, booking anything from a 12-bed dorm to a private villa can now be done online at the last minute for sometimes surprising discounts. So if your limit is a 3-star B&B but you’re dreaming of a boutique Richmond hotel, don’t rule it out until you’ve shopped around.

And wherever you stay, you can book a London Black Taxi to get you there or take you on a tour of London.

Creative Ways to Use a Black Cab

Book one of our Licensed London Black Taxis Online or phone +44 (0)203 00 44 953

There have been many unusual uses for cabs over the years, from hosting the popular game show Cash Cab to carrying troops during the First World War. Many people think that taking a black cab is just a way of getting from one place to another, they would be wrong. Although this is the primary function of the cabs, they can be used for many more things.

As September rolls by there are many reasons why taking a cab will make your life easier. As graduates leave university and head to London to look for employment they will inevitably get lost in the bowels of the city. Getting to interviews can be stressful as it is and there is no need to make it even more traumatic. By getting a cab you can remove some of the stress. You can arrive at your interview on time feeling relaxed.

Catching a cab might also be a good idea if you are responding to a London classified ad, as the cab driver can wait for you and make sure that you are safe. We already operate a “Meet and Greet” service for anyone who needs a little extra TLC when travelling. So if your child or elderly relative is arriving at the airport, and you can go to meet them, our friendly drivers will be on hand to transport them safely.

We currently offer a Treasure Hunt service, which we think is a really fun way to spend the day. Why not treat your family to an Apprentice style hunt through the capital. It really is a lot of fun. There are many ways that you can enjoy black cabs, they really are more useful than you think.

Taxi Service Testimonials

From time to time, we like to share our recent customer comments with you. It gives you an idea of what we’ve been up to lately and makes us feel warm and fuzzy inside to know we have made our customer’s day just a little bit better.

On Tuesday 27th July you took my wife and myself from The Hall in Foster Lane to Victoria Station in the early evening. I left my back rest in your cab. You took the trouble to return it to the hall….above and beyond the call of duty! Very many thanks from a grateful customer. I hope this reaches you.
–from Stuart, 31 July 2010

Hi Mike, Just a quick note (slightly delayed due to my holiday) to say how pleased I was with the service provided for the late night taxi. The taxi driver was absolutely superb, very friendly and I felt very comfortable with him. I will definitely be recommending you to colleagues. Many thanks again,
–Jane Harris, Head of Settlement Operations, Visa Europe, 3 August 2010

Hi Mike, Paul was brilliant on the day, thanks for arranging everything so promptly! I’ve actually recommended your services to one of my bridesmaids who is getting married at the end of August so she should be getting in touch soon. All the best,
–Natalia 19th July 2010

We enjoyed our tours very much and will contact you again the next time we are in London. Thank you.
–Dolly Garcia 16th July 2010

Hi Mike, I would like to pass on the comments I have received for a service we booked with you on 7th July 2010. You provided a service that enabled our Health & Safety Consultant to attend a pre-arranged training session. This involved collecting said person from their home, taking them to Paddington Station, making sure they got on the train, and then repeating the service in the evening when the consultant returned. Most people would say that this service wasn’t remarkable except the consultant had a nasty accident the week before and is confined to a wheelchair at present. Your driver Paul who was assigned for this service was extremely helpful, nothing was too much bother. He assisted our consultant through what is a daunting experience when you are in a wheelchair, to Paddington Station and accompanied them until they were on the train. Then in the evening the same process was repeated. Our consultant has said in their words “He was Excellent”. So would you please pass on a big thank you to Paul, and we will definitely use your company again as & when required. Many thanks. –Jayne Stokes, Administrator, Radis Group Ltd 10th July 2010

Many thanks to Mike and London Black Taxis for an excellent and friendly service. My husband Graham as Senior Director of Music Household Division performs on many State Ceremonial Occasions in front of the Monarch where it is imperative that he is on time. We therefore need to know that a vehicle will arrive as requested and be able to efficiently negotiate the very busy streets of London in order that we reach his destination promptly. Recently some American friends left a camera in the back of a taxi and the driver went out of his way in order to return it for which we are very grateful. The drivers of London Black Taxis are to be commended and we would not hesitate in recommending their service which we believe is second to none! Susan Morgan Jones.12th June 2010

The “Meet and Greet – Safe Conduct” Black Taxi service has literally changed my life. As a busy working Mum I was having huge difficulties collecting my daughter from swim-training in the evenings whilst trying to get the baby ready for bed. It was impossible to be in two places at the same time. Now Chris picks my daughter up after swimming and brings her home for me. He is always on time, I have no worries whatsoever about my daughter’s safety, and she loves it because he has a television in the cab which we don’t have in the car! Brilliant!!!! Many many thanx. –Ann 22nd May 2010

Travelling in London with a Disability or Injury

How user-friendly is London for those with temporary or permanent disabilities and injuries?

Bus Travel

London TravelWatch is the official watchdog organisation representing the interests of transport users in and around the capital.  They are “The voice of London’s transport users”.

Recently, London Travel Watch surveyed bus stops in the London in terms of their disabled-friendliness.  Kingston was been praised by London Travel Watch for having the most disabled-friendly bus stops in the capital. 85 per cent of bus stops in Kingston are accessible to disabled passengers, as revealed by London Travel Watch’s audit of 17,000 London bus stops.

Disabled-friendly bus stops ensure buses can get directly to the kerb to allow easy boarding and alighting, which means bus doors are not obstructed by objects on the pavement, and that parking restrictions are observed around the stops. London Travel Watch says they will continue to press Transport for London and councils to do anything necessary to ensure bus stops are accessible for all.

Taxi Travel

Here at London Black Taxis, we do our part to ensure that taxi travel in London is friendly to those with disabilities and special needs.  We operate two services that have made life easier for our injured, disabled, and special needs customers:

Our “Meet & Greet – Safe Conduct Service”

and

Our “Special Needs Service”

Our specialty “Meet & Greet – Safe Conduct” service is perfect for anyone who needs a little extra TLC when traveling, such as children, the elderly, and those with limiting injuries or disabilities.

Our “Special Needs Service” drivers are ready and willing to give you any extra assistance that you need, such as helping you down in the lift or escorting you to the train platform.

Licensed London taxis are specially designed to accept special needs customers in wheelchairs. Taxis have wheelchair ramps and safety belts to secure the wheelchair during the journey.

Together, these services have provided help and support needed by people like these:

Thank you Mike for the brilliant service we received on Saturday and Monday. It was the first time we had ventured to London with our wheelchair. We will certainly do so again in the future and will call on you again. Thanks. –Christine 1st June 2010

Thanks Mike, It has all worked out really well and made my life a lot easier!” –Suzanne (to whom we supply a taxi four times a week for her journey to work)

Our “Meet & Greet – Safe Conduct” Taxi Service

child-on-airplane

Book a Taxi Online or phone +44 (0)7779 336 612

When you book your loved one to travel by themselves, we know that you want to make sure that they are safe and have an enjoyable trip. We offer a specialty “Meet & Greet – Safe Conduct” service for just that reason.

Our specialty “Meet & Greet – Safe Conduct” service ensures the safety of your loved one who needs to travel by taxi. This service is perfect for anyone who needs a little extra TLC when traveling:

  • Children traveling alone (unaccompanied minor)
  • Teenagers
  • Young adults, such as University students
  • Elderly
  • Disabled
  • Anyone unfamiliar with London
  • Anyone traveling for the first time

How It Works

When you book the taxi, we will provide you with the driver’s name, mobile (cell) phone number, and the taxi’s vehicle registration number (license plate number). We will also give the driver your loved one’s mobile phone number, so that they can communicate and easily find each other. (If your loved one is not carrying a mobile phone, we will keep in contact with you from our central office.)

If we are picking up your loved one from an airport, we continually check the flight arrival details in order to calculate the exact arrival time. We can also pickup from a rail station, hotel, school or university, private residence, or anywhere else you designate.

sign-board

We will meet your loved one at a pre-arranged location (such as the aiport’s Arrivals Hall or rail station’s meeting point) with their name clearly written on a name board.

loading-luggage

We will then escort them to their taxi, helping with any luggage, and safely and efficiently deliver them to their destination.

Here is what some recent customers had to say

2nd July 2009
THANK YOU, for taking care of our daughter. (You picked up our daughter on July first and took her to her dorm.)

You provided excellent service. She was extremly tired and we feel bad that she forgot to give her driver a tip for helping her with her bags. Is there some place that we could mail or give him his tip?

Thanks again for everything, you guys are great.

Mr. & Mrs. J. (from Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.)

27th June 2009
Hello Mike,

Thank you for getting our daughter safely from Heathrow to her school at St. Alban’s Grove.

Thanks again,
Mrs. M.
