2010 will be the year where Augmented Reality will reach the mass market, and it has definitely arrived in London.
Nearest Tube – a new iPhone application finds your nearest London tube station. When you hold your iPhone flat, it shows all 13 lines of the London Underground system. Then as you tilt the phone up, the application shows what direction the stops are in and their distance. (Or you could just ask a London taxi driver!)
London Bus – and there is a version for finding the nearest London bus stop. This application (called the London Bus 3.0 app for iPhone) provides the nearest London bus stops and London Points Of Interest within 1km (0.621miles). This application is very useful not only for Londoners but also for travelers from overseas because it provides multi language versions.
London Fashion Week has tried AR, too. Unveiled at a special London Fashion Week show, T-shirts by Cassette Playa had a small symbol printed on the clothes like a barcode. Look at them through a webcam or mobile phone and they came to life through Augmented Reality. Video, graphics and text can all appear and wearers will even be given virtual headwear. Designs can be updated and even programmed so that wearers see a different outfit each time they look.
WorkSnug– Augmented Reality for London Workers. Trawl the coffee shops of London and you’ll see armies of people hunched over laptops. The city is their office. There’s a huge choice of places to work. From the noise and bustle of the local Starbucks, right up to formal shared office spaces such as eOffice. WorkSnug is the first tool to make sense of this emerging world. WorkSnug has discovered and personally reviewed hundreds of places to work, rating their atmosphere, noise levels, power provision, even the quality of the coffee. WorkSnug uses Augmented Reality on the iPhone to guide mobile workers to the nearest and best places to connect. Simply point and move the phone, and all becomes clear.
A London based blog called the Augmented Planet will help you stay on top of what is happening in the world of AR. You might be interested in their Augmented Planet event in London on the 12th May 2010.
So What’s it All About?
If you are like me and lag behind when it comes to new technology, you might be wondering, “What in the world is AR?!”
Augmented reality (AR) is a field of computer research which deals with the combination of real-world and computer-generated data. Computer graphics objects are blended into real footage in real time.
Augmented Reality differs from Virtual Reality. AR allows the user to see a real world that is supplemented with virtual elements whereas VR can immerse the user so that they cannot see the real world around them.
The future is here, it would seem, and you can download it. Now, do you know what download means?
