Susan Boyle, the 47 year-old singer and church volunteer from Scotland, was unknown until very recently. Today, she is being courted by famous icons such as Oprah, Catherine Zeta Jones, and even Homer Simpson!
On the 25th of May 2000, she was watched by a global audience of millions as she performed live in front of the nation for the first time.
The Scottish singer, 47, was competing in the semi-finals of the competition which she took by storm with the opening lines of her first song “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables in the first round.
ITV.com decided to make clips of the semi-final available throughout the world – rather than restrict them to the UK as is usual – because of the level of interest in Miss Boyle, who lives alone in West Lothian with her cat Pebbles.
Her first performance of I Dreamed a Dream has been viewed nearly 60 million times on video website YouTube since she sang it in April.
Organisers are insisting the final result is still up for grabs. Miss Boyle was competing against seven other acts, including a belly dancer, impersonators, a dance group and a violinist.
Asked by hosts Ant and Dec how she had coped with the pressure she said: “What pressure? I really enjoyed myself. I enjoyed every second. I’d do it again!”
We hope you do it again, Susan. And again, and again. You can count us among your biggest fans. We wish you all the best.
