How user-friendly is London for those with temporary or permanent disabilities and injuries?

Bus Travel

London TravelWatch is the official watchdog organisation representing the interests of transport users in and around the capital.  They are “The voice of London’s transport users”.

Recently, London Travel Watch surveyed bus stops in the London in terms of their disabled-friendliness.  Kingston was been praised by London Travel Watch for having the most disabled-friendly bus stops in the capital. 85 per cent of bus stops in Kingston are accessible to disabled passengers, as revealed by London Travel Watch’s audit of 17,000 London bus stops.

Disabled-friendly bus stops ensure buses can get directly to the kerb to allow easy boarding and alighting, which means bus doors are not obstructed by objects on the pavement, and that parking restrictions are observed around the stops. London Travel Watch says they will continue to press Transport for London and councils to do anything necessary to ensure bus stops are accessible for all.

Our specialty “Meet & Greet – Safe Conduct” service is perfect for anyone who needs a little extra TLC when traveling, such as children, the elderly, and those with limiting injuries or disabilities.

Our “Special Needs Service” drivers are ready and willing to give you any extra assistance that you need, such as helping you down in the lift or escorting you to the train platform.

Licensed London taxis are specially designed to accept special needs customers in wheelchairs. Taxis have wheelchair ramps and safety belts to secure the wheelchair during the journey.

Hi Mike,  I would like to pass on the comments I have received for a service we booked with you on 7th July 2010. You provided a service that enabled our  Health & Safety Consultant to attend a pre-arranged training session.  This involved collecting said person from their home, taking them to Paddington Station, making sure they got on the train, and then repeating the service in the evening when the consultant returned. Most people would say that this service wasn’t remarkable except the consultant had a nasty accident the week before and is confined to a wheelchair at present. Your driver Paul who was assigned for this service was extremely helpful, nothing was too much bother. He assisted our consultant through what is a daunting experience when you are in a wheelchair, to Paddington Station and accompanied them until they were on the train. Then in the evening the same process was repeated. Our consultant has said in their words “He was Excellent”. Please note: electric wheelchairs are slightly wider than manual wheelchairs and require a taxi with wider doors. We have several taxis on our fleet with these wider door specifications, so just remember to mention it when you make your booking.

One of our senior licensed London taxi drivers Paul (Lucky) Crew picked up Carlo Ancelotti – the Chelsea manager early this morning and took him to Gatwick Airport.
London Black Taxis prides itself on being unbiased and pragmatic (we support Tottenham Hotspurs). We were delighted to take Mr Ancelotti to his destination. He is definitely a brilliant manager winning the double for Chelsea despite the odds (Harry Redknapp). Once again Paul “Lucky” Crew proved his worth giving in depth tactical (taxical) advice to Mr Ancelotti and being Paul talked so much Mr Ancelotti didnt even notice his jounrney.

London Black Taxis was again delighted to be asked to supply licensed London taxi Marshals for a huge event taking place on Thursday 20th May at the Debut Club on Weston Street London SE1.

There were over 650 guests present, requiring taxis during and after the event.
Again destinations were in all directions.
Our Taxi Marshals once again pulled out all the stops and the whole process worked like clockwork.

V&A Museum

London Black Taxis was pleased and very proud to be asked to supply licensed London taxi marshals for an event taking place on Wednesday 12th May at The Victoria and Albert Museum.

There were over 250 guests present, each requiring a taxi after the event. As part of the service, our Taxi Share Scheme enabled the Marshals to place up to 5 or 6 passengers (Mercedes Vito Taxis) in the same taxi, thus reducing waiting times and allowing the passengers to share the fare.

Even though guests were heading out in all directions–some home, some to restaurants for late suppers–our experienced Marshals organised everthing smoothly. Everything went like clockwork with no one waiting longer than two minutes for their taxi.

£160.00 per taxi for a 2 1/2 – 3 hour tour (taxi seats up to 5 adults)  

• Highlights all of the Jack the Ripper sites in East London.  Visit the murder sites among the maze of cobblestone alleyways that helped Jack evade detection and capture.

The Ten Bells Pub

• Stop at the Ten Bells Pub, where our Specialist Trained Ripperologist will continue the eery story of how Jack lured the working girls of this pub to their fate. The Ten Bells is indelibly linked with the Jack the Ripper Story and still looks much like it did in 1888.
  

The Deluxe Jack

£245.00 per taxi for a half-day tour (approx. 5 hours) (taxi seats up to 5 adults) 

• Includes the Basic Jack tour, as described above, plus:

• Also includes a walking tour of atmospheric East London that will transport you back to that long-ago era of gas-lit shadows. Walk the streets where the murders occurred and hear more hair-raising tales from our Specialist Trained Ripperologist.

Walk the maze of cobblestone alleyways

• We also stop at the White Hart pub, a true Jack the Ripper landmark and where one of the major suspects actually worked.

Wheelchair Accessible

All our taxis are wheelchair accessible.  Slight modifications can be made to the tour, if necessary, for easier wheelchair access.  Our drivers are always pleased to help.   

Some electric wheelchairs may be too wide, so please phone us for specific information if you are travelling with an electric wheelchair. 

Why book with us?

The typical Jack the Ripper coach tour is £27.00 per person.  Our “Basic Jack” tour is £32.00 per person when shared between 5 people.  For £5.00 more per person, you travel in a small, personalised tour group in the comfort of an inconic London Black Taxi. 

Our tour guides are Licensed London taxi drivers who have specialised in the Jack the Ripper legend.  

We will pick you up and drop you off at any central London location, inclusive in the tour price.  Coach tours pick up and drop off at a location of their choice, leaving you to make your own way to and from that location. 

We will schedule your tour to suit you.  Jack the Ripper coach and walking tours occur only at certain times of the day, certain days of the week, and in some cases, only during certain months of the year.  Our tours occur at your convenience.

The term “ripperology” was coined to describe the study and analysis of the Ripper cases.   

Because the murders were never solved, the legends surrounding them became a combination of genuine historical research, folklore, and pseudohistory.  There are over one hundred theories about the Ripper’s identity, and the murders have inspired multiple works of fiction.

We were delighted to be asked to supply 10 licensed London black taxis with white ribbons for the wedding of Mr and Mrs Andrew and Julianne Barnard.

The marriage took place at the Holy Redemer Church, Cheyne Row, London SW3 and afterwards the reception was held at the Belvedere Restaurant, Holland Park London W8.

London Black Taxis was proud to be invited to be  invloved in Peter Jones’s annual charity event.
This year it was in favour of Colon Cancer Charity.
We were asked to take three lovely ladies from their department store in Sloane Square SW1 to the John Lewis Department store at Bluewater carrying an iconic baton which will be passed onto every John Lewis Partnership store in the country and eventually it will end up in Edinburgh.
It was indeed a pleasure and a privilage to be involved and hope that a considerable amount of money will be raised for the charity.
Naturally, London Black Taxis will be making it’s own donation to the charity.
