Boris Johnson and his transport adviser were involved in a near miss while cycling in east London yesterday after a truck nearly dragged a car into the path of their bikes.

The mayor of London, a keen cycling enthusiast, was on one of his regular scouting expeditions around London looking for flagship cycle routes with his team when a lorry’s backdoor swung open and hooked into a parked car, according to Johnson’s spokesman.

Just minutes earlier, transport minister Lord Andrew Adonis was among those cycling with the mayor as they toured to see where best to place cycle Super Highways”, which are designated to make it easier and safer for cyclists to get around the capital.

The car was dragged along the street and was “catapulted” right in the middle of the cycling party, just behind Johnson.

Kulveer Ranger, Johnson’s director of transport, was left shaken after narrowly escaping being hit.

Peter Hendy, the commissioner for Transport for London, was also in the group. No one was hurt.

Johnson, who next week will launch London’s summer of cycling to promote two wheels as a “stylish and desirable way to travel”, said:

“I am relieved that no one was hurt, but this incident reinforces the need for us to make London’s roads safer for cyclists, which I am determined to do and to make London the best city for cyclists in Europe.”

The mayor said Super Highways would provide a “central role” by providing clearly demarcated routes for cyclists that “lorry drivers and others will be aware of”.

Johnson is investing most of the £111m earmarked for cycling this year into the new routes, coupled with funding his Velib-style bike hire scheme which is due to be put into place next year.

Boris Johnson is also an advocate for the London Black Taxi trade.

If cycling around London’s busy city streets doesn’t appeal to you, give us a call and book a nice, safe taxi instead.

Another 24 hour strike on the tube is announced.

Last month the entire Victoria line was suspended as a drivers strike choked the underground.

Nearly 200 tube drivers on London’s busiest line will walk out 9pm tomorrow over “safety and harassment” and are not set to return to work until 8.59pm Thursday.

Rail and Maritime and Transport described the strike from train operators working out of the Seven Sisters depot, “rock solid”.

174 million people use London’s busiest tube line every year, 600,000 every day – Transport for London have called the industrial action “completely unnecessary.”

“Bullying and harassment”

The union have accused London Underground management of “bullying, harassment and victimization” of a RMT activist and demand the reinstatement of a sacked college.

At the heart of the dispute is the Correct Door Side Enabling Equipment which ensures doors on the right side of the platform are opened and is in operation on all other lines – except the Victoria.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow accused LU of “penny pinching” that is “puts both our members and the general public at risk.”

Dispute “not about safety”

London Underground Chief Operating Officer Howard Collins said the dispute “was not about safety”. Adding:

“This dispute is about the actions of one RMT member, a Victoria Line driver, who put passenger safety at risk and then compounded his error by failing to follow the correct safety procedures.

This will not be resolved by further strike action, which will only lose RMT members more pay and inconvenience thousands of Londoners, who rightly expect us to uphold safety standards on the Tube.” RMT leader Bob Crow said management intransigence has “forced” his members into action. Adding:

“We know very well the disruption that the action will cause but we will not sit back while managers play fast and loose with train safety and while our members and activists are subjected to intimidation, bullying and victimisation.”

Well, we say “Don’t worry. Be Happy. Take a Taxi instead!”
