We recently worked for a Film Production Company shooting a commercial for a new Renault Sports Car.
They were filming in all of the european Capitals.
We were very pleased to be asked to participate in their London filming session.

One of our senior licensed London taxi drivers Paul (Lucky) Crew picked up Carlo Ancelotti – the Chelsea manager early this morning and took him to Gatwick Airport.
London Black Taxis prides itself on being unbiased and pragmatic (we support Tottenham Hotspurs). We were delighted to take Mr Ancelotti to his destination. He is definitely a brilliant manager winning the double for Chelsea despite the odds (Harry Redknapp). Once again Paul “Lucky” Crew proved his worth giving in depth tactical (taxical) advice to Mr Ancelotti and being Paul talked so much Mr Ancelotti didnt even notice his jounrney.

V&A Museum

London Black Taxis was pleased and very proud to be asked to supply licensed London taxi marshals for an event taking place on Wednesday 12th May at The Victoria and Albert Museum.

There were over 250 guests present, each requiring a taxi after the event. As part of the service, our Taxi Share Scheme enabled the Marshals to place up to 5 or 6 passengers (Mercedes Vito Taxis) in the same taxi, thus reducing waiting times and allowing the passengers to share the fare.

Even though guests were heading out in all directions–some home, some to restaurants for late suppers–our experienced Marshals organised everthing smoothly. Everything went like clockwork with no one waiting longer than two minutes for their taxi.

London Black Taxis was proud to be invited to be  invloved in Peter Jones’s annual charity event.
This year it was in favour of Colon Cancer Charity.
We were asked to take three lovely ladies from their department store in Sloane Square SW1 to the John Lewis Department store at Bluewater carrying an iconic baton which will be passed onto every John Lewis Partnership store in the country and eventually it will end up in Edinburgh.
It was indeed a pleasure and a privilage to be involved and hope that a considerable amount of money will be raised for the charity.
Naturally, London Black Taxis will be making it’s own donation to the charity.

We were involved in a highly successful “Film Production” booking yesterday with RTÉ (Dublin) which took up the whole day.
The extremely successful and popular John Murry, radio presenter on Saturday mornings on RTE (Dublin), had a  one-to-one with one of our senior drivers Paul Crew.
They discused (on camera) the UK economy, and Paul was asked to openly voice his opinions on the state of the country at the moment.
There was a special interest taken on the development and owners of Battersea Power Station.
Never short of something to say Paul entertained and educated Mr Murry and left him in no doubt on his position regarding Gordon Brown and new Labour, and the sad state of the once renowned icon of the Battersea Power Station.
Things must have gone very smoothly as we didnt receive the obligatory urgent phone call asking us to stop Paul talking.

We organised an amazing and wonderful “Harry Potter Treasure Hunt” on Saturday.
There were fifteeen ladies in three licensed black London taxis going head to head starting and ending in Belsize Park, NW3.
The whole hunt lasted over two and a half hours and everyone involved had a wonderful time.
The winning team arrived back at NW3 with thirty minutes to spare and enjoyed a magnum of champagne.

It’s official!  London Black Taxis has delivered its first baby to Mrs Aniko Nagyne Vig.  He was born on 10th March at 19.49pm and weighed in at 3.5kg and 54cm.

We were telephoned early in the morning and asked if we took heavily pregnant women to hospital to have their babies.  I explained that all of our licensed London taxi drivers are equipped with a bucket of piping hot water and white towels. [Just kidding!]

Naturally, we pulled out all the stops and hopefully didn’t go through any red traffic lights.  We managed to get Mrs Aniko Nagyne Vig to St Thomas’s hospital in time to have her baby son.

Although baby “Adam” was born several weeks prematurely,  all is well and mother and son are now home and doing well.

Scientists have uncovered evidence for an inbuilt “sat-nav” system in the brains of London taxi drivers.

They used magnetic scanners to explore the brain activity of taxi drivers as they navigated their way through a virtual simulation of London’s streets.

Different brain regions were activated as they considered route options, spotted familiar landmarks or thought about their customers.

The research was presented at the BA Science Festival last year.

Earlier studies had shown that taxi drivers have a larger hippocampus – a region of the brain that plays an important role in navigation.

Their brains even “grow on the job” as they build up detailed information needed to find their way around London’s labyrinth of streets – information famously referred to as “The Knowledge”.

“We were keen to go beyond brain structure – and see what activity is going on inside the brains of taxi drivers while they are doing their job,” said Dr Hugo Spiers from University College London.

The scientists used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to obtain “minute by minute” brain images from 20 taxi drivers as they delivered customers to destinations on “virtual jobs”.

The scientists adapted the Playstation2 game “Getaway” to bring the streets of London into the scanner.

After the scan – and without prior warning – the drivers watched a replay of their performance and reported what they had been thinking at each stage.

“We tried to peel out the common thoughts that taxi drivers tend to have as they drive through the city, and then tie them down to a particular time and place,” said Dr Spiers.

The series of scans revealed a complex choreography of brain activity as the taxi drivers responded to different scenarios.

The hippocampus was only active when the taxi drivers initially planned their route, or if they had to completely change their destination during the course of the journey.

The scientists saw activity in a different brain region when the drivers came across an unexpected situation – for example, a blocked-off junction.

Another part of the brain helped taxi drivers to track how close they were to the endpoint of their journey; like a metal detector, its activity increased when they were closer to their goal.

Changes also occurred in brain regions that are important in social behaviour.

Taxi driving is not just about navigation: “Drivers do obsess occasionally about what their customers are thinking,” said Dr Spiers.

Animals use a number of different mechanisms to navigate – the Sun’s polarized light rays, the Earth’s magnetic fields and the position of the stars.

This research provides new information about the specific roles of areas within the brains of expert human navigators.

Intelligent Energy, a leading clean power systems company, has developed a hydrogen fuel cell that they say will be installed into a fleet of zero emission London taxis by 2012–a programme part funded by the UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board.

The fuel cell powered vehicles will include batteries to allow them to operate as hybrid vehicles for a day without refueling. Drivers of these TX4 black cabs will be able to refuel in a few minutes using hydrogen depots situated around central London.

Intelligent Energy says that the new cabs will be capable of achieving speeds of up to 75 miles per hour and faster acceleration than standard taxis, despite being emission-free. They will be able to operate in temperatures as low as -20°C. (It doesn’t get that cold in London; it only feels that way sometimes!)

“The black cab is an internationally recognised and iconic symbol of London,” said Intelligent Energy’s Henri Winand. “What better stage to prove the credentials of British innovation than on the way to the 2012 London Olympics?”

Intelligent Energy plans to develop technology to power between 50 and 100 of London’s 21,000 black taxis, a token number at best.  The real question for real taxi drivers is how well will these taxis perform in day-to-day use?
