On the 10th of December 2009, we provided two London Black Taxis to Firmenich, the largest privately-owned company in the perfume and flavor business, for their Vampire Treasure Hunt night in London.

The participants, dressed in their best vampire attire and with their faces ghoulishly painted, toured central London in style and comfort, safely ensconced in the back of one of our taxis with their Harrod’s food and champagne hampers.

Each team accumulated points by snapping ghostly photos, solving spooky clues, and collecting Dracula’s treasure.

Our drivers, Russ and John, participated as part of each team.  Their mission: to deliver their teams to the end of the hunt by 8 p.m. or suffer loss of points!

The end of their Treasure Hunt took them to Fifteen, Jamie Oliver’s restaurant on Westland Place, which was booked for them by their company.

A great time was had by all, although we had later reports that one of the teams cheated beyond reason!

London’s National Theatre has announced 4 new productions to open between January and March 2010.

London Assurance

Included are the return of Simon Russell Beale, Richard Briers and Fiona Shaw to the venue in a new production of Dion Boucicault’s classic play London Assurance.

Boucicault was the Irish genius of London theatre in the age of Dickens, and in London Assurance, written in 1841, he created two of the great comic roles for the English stage in Lord Harcourt and Lady Spanker, played here by Simon Russell Beale and Fiona Shaw.

The cast will also include Richard Briers (in his first London stage appearance since 2002), Paul Ready, and Michelle Terry. The production will be designed by Mark Thompson, with lighting by Neil Austin, music by Rachel Portman and sound by John Leonard.

Really Old, Like Forty-Five

Tamsin Oglesby’s “Really Old, Like Forty-Five” will begin performances in the Cottesloe Theatre Jan. 27, prior to an official opening Feb. 3. A furious comedy that confronts head-on our embarrassment and fear about old age, it will be directed by Anna Mackmin (designed by Lez Brotherston, with lighting by Mark Henderson, video design by Mark Grimmer with Lysander Ashton, choreography by Scarlett Mackmin and sound by Christopher Shutt).

The cast: Lucy May Barker, Paul Bazely, Amelia Bullmore, Tanya Franks, Gawn Grainger, Thomas Jordan, Michela Meazza, Judy Parfitt, Paul Ritter and Marcia Warren.

The White Guard

Mikhail Bulgakov’s “The White Guard”, a play set in Kiev during the Russian civil war, will be revived in a new version by Andrew Upton, beginning performances in the Lyttelton Theatre March 15, prior to an official opening March 23.

Howard Davies will direct a cast that will include Pip Carter, Paul Higgins, Conleth Hill, and Justine Mitchell. The production will be designed by Bunny Christie, with lighting by Neil Austin and sound by Christopher Shutt.

The 14th Tale

The 14th Tale, described as a free-flowing narrative that tells the hilarious exploits of a natural born mischief growing from the clay streets of Nigeria to rooftops in Dublin, and finally to London, is written and performed by Nigerian-born Inua Ellams.

It will visit the Cottesloe Theatre for ten performances only, beginning Feb. 9 and running in rep to March 13. It is directed by Thierry Lawson, with lighting by Michael Nabarro.

Good morning

I am wondering if you can help me,

Late yesterday evening, around 11.30 pm, I was hopelessly lost in my old Audi car somewhere in the City(!) needing to collect my husband from Coleman Street, EC2.

After driving around aimlessly for over an hour I noticed a black cab (or rather dark green cab) pulling into a block of flats and stopped him to ask if he could help me by providing directions. It soon became clear it was quite a complicated route and amazingly he offered to lead me. .

He took me straight to Coleman Street, checked I was OK, and then drove away, All I know is the first part of his number plate, N980, but would very much like to have the opportunity of sending him a note or message to thank him properly because without him I would probably still be wandering the streets! I was obviously quite a long way from Coleman Street but was finding it very difficult to stop in heavy traffic to ask for help.

Can you help me to identify him so that I can hopefully direct a message of thanks to him?

We just had to share this email that we just received from our customer Mo.

I used London Black Taxis.net on 21st November 2009 for the first time. I am wheelchair user living in the Midlands and travelled with family to London to see a west end show. The organisation of London Black Taxis.net was very impressive from the moment of first point of contact. Regular contact was made between myself and the company to confirm pick up location, driver name, mobile tel number and registration details.

We were picked up in a Mercedes vito outside London Euston train station. The taxi was able to take me and my family (total of 6 of us) whilst the usual black cab could only take 5 people. Whilst I am unable to mobilise myself from the wheelchair to the seat in the taxi, with family assistance I could sit in one of the taxi seats. The driver took the wheelchair and stowed it in the taxi.

The driver, John Farmer, was very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for him. We took a visit to Covent Garden and the driver showed us where the theatre was before dropping us off at Covent Garden – thus making it very easy to find our way back to the Theatre. The same driver picked us up directly outside the Theatre in heavy rain – again nothing was too much trouble for him. Plenty of fun banter on both journeys too which added to the fun!

I would definitely use London Black Taxis.net again. It took the hassle out of trying to flag down a taxi in London on a Saturday and made the day out stress free.

London’s raw food scene is exploding.

After decades of raw food diets provoking gasps of disbelief, London’s raw food scene has moved into the city’s mainstream health food movement with a burgeoning network of restaurants, market stalls, delivery services, workshops and lifestyle events.

Raw food or ‘live food’ dishes are made from produce – usually but not always unprocessed, organic and vegan – cooked at a temperature below 48C (warmer than body temperature, but still not even half way between frozen and boiling water). On raw food websites it is often referred to as ‘high vibrational food’, some theories suggesting that, being uncooked, ‘live’ foods have more enzymes and a higher nutrient content than cooked ‘dead’ foods.

Chad Sarno, culinary mastermind behind Saf, London’s most high-end raw food restaurant that opened in April 2008, says. ‘I find terms like “high vibrational” alienate people. Basically it’s food in its purest, freshest form, so of course it’s healthier and in my opinion tastier than cooked food.’

The Saf menu includes dishes that sound impossible to create from raw ingredients: beetroot ravioli and Chinese pancakes share the line up with pad Thai and autumn risotto.

At Dragonfly Wholefoods in Highgate the menu offers sumptuous falafel, pizza, sunflower burgers and onion bread available in all their uncooked glory.

Many of these dishes wouldn’t be possible without a dehydrator, the ovens of the raw world. The one other staple to create such dishes is a heavy-duty blender, this also being essential for making nut milks, butters and cheeses.

‘Everything you know about cooking you throw out the window,’ says Sarno. ‘There’s no direct raw equivalent for, say, frying or roasting. It’s a totally different science.’ The techniques in raw cookery revolve around soaking, sprouting, blending and dehydrating, all techniques Sarno whisks students through in a whistlestop tour during his three-hour Introduction To Raw Cuisine class.

Many raw food enthusiasts make claims of improved health on switching to a raw food diet, but one benefit which is more palpable is weight loss – a strictly followed raw food diet is an almost guaranteed route to shedding pounds. Some feel it also has a massive impact on your general wellbeing.

The Spice Girls are being tipped to re-form to help kick off the start of the 2012 Olympics in London.

The flamboyant British girl group, which split in 2000, have been in talks with their former manager Simon Fuller about performing at the opening ceremony of the Games.

“They stand for so much in British music history and I can’t think of a better time for them to get back together for another performance,” he told the Sunday Mirror newspaper.

“The demand for them as a band is as strong as ever.”

Fuller also hinted that the girls – Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell – could embark on a farewell tour about the time of the Olympics.

“They will not want to be performing hits like Wannabe in their 40s, but it’s amazing how often people talk about another reunion,” he said.

“And I think if they do it, it’s going to be in 2012.”

The Spice Girls, who released their debut single Wannabe in 1996, disbanded two years after Halliwell suddenly quit.

They re-formed in late 2007 for a world tour and released a greatest hits album.
